Future Returns with Mixtape Pluto – A Journey Back to His Mixtape Roots

Future, Atlanta’s rap titan, is back with his latest solo project, Mixtape Pluto, which dropped on September 20, 2024, via Freebandz and Epic Records. Despite the title’s nod to his earlier work, Mixtape Pluto is a fully-fledged album rather than an actual mixtape. The title signals Future’s return to the raw, hungry sound that defined his mid-2010s rise to rap royalty.

This new project follows a busy year for Future, as it marks his third major release of 2024. Earlier in the year, he teamed up with longtime collaborator Metro Boomin for We Don’t Trust You and We Still Don’t Trust You, both of which made waves, with the latter sparking one of the year’s most talked-about rap feuds between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. Now, Future’s Mixtape Pluto arrives as a solo effort, showcasing his ability to stand on his own without any features or contributions from Metro Boomin.

Instead, Future turns to two of his other frequent collaborators—Southside and Wheezy—who take the helm as executive producers. They drive the sonic landscape of the album, creating moody, hard-hitting beats that pair perfectly with Future’s signature sound. Tracks like “Too Fast,” “Lil Demon,” and “South of France” (a track that was teased by Travis Scott but without credited features) highlight the production’s depth while allowing Future to take center stage.

With Mixtape Pluto, Future continues to show why he remains a dominant force in the rap world. The album reflects his commitment to rapping with intensity, especially on standout tracks like “Ski,” where he locks into the beat and delivers with precision. The album’s beats, handled by Southside, Wheezy, and their co-producers, give off a familiar yet fresh vibe, reinforcing Future’s ability to stay relevant while evolving his sound.

What makes Mixtape Pluto even more significant is its position as Future’s first solo album since his 2022 hit, I Never Liked You, which garnered him a Grammy nomination and ruled the Billboard 200. The new project also marks Future’s first solo mixtape-esque release since Purple Reign in 2016, a nod to fans who have longed for the rapper to recapture his early mixtape magic.

As Future continues to navigate a busy 2024, Mixtape Pluto stands as a defining moment in his career, proving that even after years at the top, he still has plenty of fire left.
